About item to be received :

This section is for small packets, small packets are those below the customs allowance value of RS 2000 , Well, i received a 86 dollar parcel at the post office so it really depends what the package is about.

  • If it is a small package with high declared value, they might give it to your local post office without any problem.

  • Small packets ( at times) are delivered at your home, whether you are present or not, they will leave it as they leave letters down your letter box.

  • Registered parcels , and bigger packets ought to be fetched at your local post office, In this case, they will drop by a Pink card in your pigeon box which ought to be presented along with your identity card ( old or new) to get your parcel. This pink paper includes your name, the packet description like " Ordinary packet, Registered parcel" as well as the tracking number in applicable letters

  • Parcel Requiring Signature , Some parcels which are meant to be delivered at your home wouldn't be delivered in case you are not present since signature is required. In such a case where you are not present, you will receive a Blue card to fetch it at the post office.

Expensive Parcels- Parcels above Rs 2000

  • These parcels have to be fetched at the general post office at port louis, just next to Caudan.

  • usually you receive a yellow card which you will need to bring along with your ID card at the general post office for custom clearance, but lately they will Send you a letter indicating the item and the price declared.

  • When you go there you will present the Paper and you will need to wait till you get to a custom officer. They will ask you about the package contents and check it as well as ask about the price you paid.

  • After custom assesment, you will need to pay a postal fee of RS 56 for getting the parcel out of customs and in case of high prices, you will need to pay TVA/ TAX which is 15% of the original price

  • THe calculation is done by taking the original price - ALlowance

Example : 10000 RS item , Rs 2000 Allowance

so they will calculate 15% of Rs 8000 for the VAT

  • Then you will receive your item

NOTE : Not all items with the "Gift" check will skip customs, only small items might skip customs, bigger items will really need to go for custom duty.

About shippings :

-USPS ( ANY USPS) - Parcel Post office

-FEDEX - Fedex company - They will drop it at your home

-Collisimo International - Cellero express - They will drop at your home

-ARAMEX - Cellero express ( it is found a bit near suffren hotel though) in case you want your item to be check in front of you

-DHL - They will drop it for you home

-UPS - Same goes for it

-Note : UPS is the most expensive shipping method available, Never tried it but Opinions say it is extremely fast.

-The companies i mentionned above, in case of custom duty will call you and tell you how much you would need to pay for custom duty in case of expensive items.

-Celero express takes Rs 150 for custom clearance i think

-In case of low value items, you just produce your ID when they come for delivery and you do not have to remove a cent LOL.

-In case you are not home , they might even drive and deliver it to you anywhere you are.

The rest of shipping will be delivered by postman else, Except companies i do not know about yet.

When the item arrive in Mauritius, you will get a notice as soon as possible except sundays.

This is described fully here. The postman will only deliver to your home if the item you're buying is not subjected to customs tax and not too heavy for him to carry.

When your order is held at the Parcel Office (La Douane), you will get a card through the post telling you that your parcel has arrived and you need to collect at their main office in Port-Louis. Normally you would need to pay customs tax when you receive that card.

I've ordered quite a few things from different countries and sometimes I receive the items directly at home and sometimes, I have to go to the Parcel Office. The custom officers make a judgement call when a parcel arrive and if they think it may be liable to tax, they will hold it and send you that card for you to come collect it. Usually you need to bring along proof of purchase so they can see how much you pay for the item and tax it accordingly. You can print your invoice from ebay for that.
