Hi, first of all hats off to the founders of this platform, cause we really needed something like this.

Now, let's say I want to import a new brand of cosmetics from India to market and sell in Mauritius. For a value of Rs 10,000.

My question is, do I need a permit or a broker for this? Or can I simply present my invoice at the parcel post office, pay the tax required and take my stuff?

Also, when it comes to setting the price for the products am gonna sell, is there a standard price index or something that I need to be aware of, or do I set my own price? As far as I know, I haven't seen these products in Mauritius yet.

Thanks in advance for your replies

You only need a broker if the value exceeds Rs20,000. There's a link in this answer which will show you the MRA tariff so that you know exactly how much customs are likely to charge you at the Parcel Office. Give them a call as well to double all the information; they are usually helpful.

When it comes to setting the price, well there's the Consumer Protection Act which you need to be aware of. However that depends on how you're going to sell your stuff - if you're going to sell them on Facebook groups for example, you can set whichever price you want but if you'll be having a registered company to trade, then you may get in trouble if someone reports you.

Thanks a lot! That's a huge relief. Yes I'll ring them up just to be sure. I plan on registering a company and selling both on Facebook groups and offline, but I've gone through the acts on the link you sent me and didn't see cosmetics listed, which means I'm on the safe side I guess :)

If the goods you are bringing is for sale, then the price doesn't matter. You must go through a customs broker.

Not true; I've been through the process myself and the steps I've defined above are correct.

There is a difference between the goods you bring through the post. If it is for personal use, then you don't have to go through a broker, else for goods intended for sale, you have to go through a broker.

Trust me, I am in this field.

It's not a matter of trust. I believe through facts and if you can provide evidence to back up your claim, then I'm all ears. I've given a link to the MRA website to prove my point above, can you share an official link or some other source of your information?
