More prospects in Networking or Software?

My question is which field has the more prospect (promotions), network or software engineer based on the local market and abroad. which one has more suitable work/social life balance? and what is the entry/top salaries of these fields.

Software development pays more than Networking. A Network Engineer/Administrator knows how to use existing tools but a Software Developer creates new tools, hence the latter is paid more.

From personal experience, I have been able to make significant progress in my career as a Web Developer with every 2 years experience I got. That's based on UK market but Mauritius seems to follow a similar trend.

I'm not sure about salaries in Mauritius though but I've been told a programmer can expect to get Rs35,000 with 5 years experience if he can sell himself well during the interview. In England, you can way more than that, check reed.co.uk to get an idea.
